Marvel does it again! The newest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also known as the MCU, Captain Marvel was released March 8, 2019. It stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn. It is rated PG-13, takes place in 1995, and there are several fun 1990s references and a good soundtrack.
Vers, a member of the Kree soldiers, and her team follow their war enemies, the Skrulls to Earth. She attempts to track down these shapeshifting beings with the help of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury. However, she starts to get a feeling that she may have had a prior life on Earth. As her alien hunt continues, she starts to piece together her past and tries to figure out what’s happened to her. Will she find the Skrulls and remember who she was?
This is the 21st MCU movie in the connected storyline, so it was definitely in competition with all the others released before it. However, it works, mainly due to its story and significance of its hero. For one thing, this is the first one to focus on a single female superhero. She is effective as a character and sets a strong feminism message with her attitude, fighting abilities, and powers. Brie Larson was a great casting choice for the role. Another one of the great actors in the movie is Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury. His character has appeared several times before in the MCU, but this is his biggest role yet. He portrays a less cynical, younger version of the iconic character who is more comedic and actually smiles. He is great to watch. There is also a cat named Goose that steals a lot of the movie’s scenes. Now, it’s time to talk about the movie’s action scenes.
Marvel has always been impressive with its action scenes, and this movie doesn’t disappoint. The action in this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat, and is a lot of fun. There’s plenty of action with a bunch of characters fighting each other at several points during the film. In addition to the action scenes, the visuals and effects are really excellent. These things make the movie seem more realistic and unique. I also appreciate the makeup used for the Skrulls, convincing us that they are really aliens. Finally, I would like to talk about the story.
The story is interesting with the amount of information that is revealed to the audience given at a good pace. You don’t have all the facts at once and the movie even plays you and makes you shocked at the realizations. It’s also interesting how it preludes to Guardians of the Galaxy with the Kree alien race. We learn some of the backstory involving them. They also give us backstory to the forming of the Avengers. These all help to form a cohesive timeline in the MCU.
Overall, this was an impressive MCU movie with an inspiring and empowering story. It definitely works in delivering information on a superhero we need to know about for the upcoming release of Avengers: Endgame. The story, performances, and action are successful in entertaining the audience. I recommend this film to anyone, whether a MCU fan or not. A job well done.
