They’re faster and more furious than ever! The August 2, 2019 released film Hobbs & Shaw, is the 9th film in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba, it is rated PG-13 and takes place in London, Ukraine, and Samoa.

The cyborg-like Brixton Lore is seeking a dangerous virus to release on the world. Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw are called in to work together to stop him, even though they hate each other. It also turns out that Shaw’s sister Hattie has injected herself with the virus, so they must find a way to get it out of her without killing her. With not much time left and a superhuman enemy, can they save the world? Can they learn to put aside their rivalry for the greater good?

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham team up with each other as reluctant allies for the second time in the series, after The Fate of the Furious in 2017. This movie focuses more on the team up however, and it’s interesting to see it portrayed in greater detail. The two have great chemistry and perform well together, while Idris Elba as Brixton Lore and Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw are a solid supporting cast. Their athletic fight scenes display awesome hand to hand combat.

The film is a lot funnier than I thought it would be. There’s enough humor with the caustic interactions between the two main characters, but there’s other unexpected humorous moments to keep people laughing throughout. There’s also a surprise appearance from a famous comedy actor that does his usual sarcastic dialogue well.

The action scenes are incredible. They really keep you on the edge of your seat up until the very end. All the stunts that had to be performed in this movie are quite a blast to watch and they are like watching a Mission: Impossible movie, except it’s The Fast and the Furious.

Despite all the things done right mentioned above, this film did some things wrong. The story really isn’t that interesting and it’s been told before several times, so there’s not that much left to explore. Granted, I’m sure most people are going to see this for the action as opposed to the story, but it’s still a miss in my opinion.

If I do have to praise one thing about the story though, there’s a plot point that still has me guessing after I saw the movie. It makes me excited for the next film in this series.

Overall, this movie takes the audience on a fun and wild ride. Not the best, but worth watching at least a couple times in your life.
