It’s time for a new era. Marvel Studios has released Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2, 2019. Starring Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jake Gyllenhaal, it takes place in Europe 2024 and is rated PG-13. It is the 23rd Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie, the 2nd Spider-Man movie by the studio, and the first one after the completion of the Infinity Saga.
Peter Parker has tried to balance his role as a high school student and as the superhero Spider-Man. Trying to relax on a vacation to Europe with his friends, Nick Fury tracks him down and sends him on a mission. He needs to work with Quentin Beck/Mysterio from another dimension to take down powerful beings called the Elementals. All throughout, Peter does not want to get the task done, preferring to enjoy the trip and figure out how to confess his feelings to his crush, Michelle Jones (MJ). Can he find what it takes to do what’s right?
Avengers: Endgame was the end of the Infinity Saga for Marvel. There was a question of whether or not they could still thrive in a new series. This film seems to prove that they could. How did they manage to do it? Let’s take a look.
Spider-Man is an interesting, complex character. He wants to do the right thing, but is torn by the fact that he lives a relatively hard life for a teenager having to keep part of his identity hidden and bears a great responsibility to use his superpowers wisely. He makes mistakes, but always tries to fix them. This makes his character relatable and likable. His character develops at a more interesting pace than in the previous Spider-Man movie. He’s not just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man anymore, since he’s called to action in Europe taking on the role of a full-fledged Avenger. Another thing I think they go further with than in the previous movie is the action. It is more creative and original than in Spider-Man: Homecoming. A fight scene with an Elemental can be described as an awesome action scene. I wasn’t a big fan of the CGI used for the Elementals though, I didn’t think it looked that realistic. It seemed to me like it was just too much of a computer-generated image.
The story works really well and ends up not being what you expected. There is a major plot twist thrown in that completely changes your view of the story. They find a way to continue the storyline from Avengers: Endgame and still make it feel like a Spider-Man movie. In terms of the actors, Tom Holland, in my opinion, is the best Spider-Man of any other actors who have played the part. He evokes the conflicted teenage superhero masterfully. Samuel L. Jackson continues his iconic role as the fearsome leader of the Avengers, while Jake Gyllenhaal is well cast and gives an equally strong performance as a newcomer. Zendaya’s performance as MJ is both refreshing and original from the comics’ character and she provides a strong female presence to Spider-Man.
Overall, I was impressed by this movie. It looks like the MCU has a big future ahead of them even with the Infinity Saga over. Check it out, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. And stay for the two post-credits scenes, they’re both game-changers and will leave you shocked. My mind was racing trying to figure out the implications of these two scenes!
